Tyler Sash, 25, was charged with public intoxication and interference with official acts.

An Oskaloosa police officer attempted to pull the former safety over around 1:30 a.m. Saturday after spotting Sash riding a Motovox MVS-10 motorized scooter without lights down a major thoroughfare, said Oskaloosa Police Chief Jake McGee.

Instead of stopping, Sash fled, authorities said. Officers pursued the scooter for four blocks before Sash bailed off and ran into a wooded area, McGee said.

Officers briefly lost him in the dark but then found him behind a tree, authorities said. He was shocked with a stun gun after refusing to come out.

Sash was arrested and taken to the Mahaska County Jail.

Sash’s attorney, Matthew Moore, said he would not comment on the pending charges. Moore said his client plans to plead not guilty, and “trust the justice system.”

Sash finished his three-year career at Iowa (2008-10) with 13 interceptions. He played 23 games in the 2011 and 2012 seasons in the NFL. He did not play in 2013 after he was suspended last July for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Sash said at the time his suspension stemmed from his use of the prescription drug Adderall, which he didn’t realize was an NFL banned substance.
