Former Iowa golfer Steven Ihm will make his professional debut at this summer’s John Deere Classic.

A three-time all-Big Ten selection for the Hawkeyes, Ihm has received a sponsor’s exemption to the PGA Tour event for a second straight year. The John Deere Classic takes place July 10-13 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

“I am honored for the opportunity to compete in the John Deere Classic again this year, and could not ask for a better tournament to make my pro debut,” said Ihm, who is from Peosta. “This is a great chance for me to jump-start my pro career and I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”

Ihm shot 71-69 as an amateur in the 2013 Deere, missing the cut by two shots. That experience gave him confidence in a potential professional career.

“I know I can play,” Ihm said after finishing the second round in 2013.

Ihm is currently ranked 24th in the world amateur golf rankings. He was a second-team all-Big Ten pick as a sophomore, after spending his freshman year at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. He then made first team all-Big Ten as a junior and senior.

Ihm won two medalist titles as a senior, giving him four for his career. He was also named to the Big Ten Tournament’s all-championship team after finishing fifth in the medalist competition. His 71.45 stroke average as a senior was the second-lowest mark in school history.

Ihm was named Big Ten player of the week five times during his career, and was named Golfweek National Player of the week April 21 after winning the Boilermaker Invitational with a final-round 64. That matched the second-lowest round in school history.

“We would like to thank (Deere tournament director) Clair Peterson and the tournament board for allowing Steven to make his second start on the PGA Tour right here at home at the John Deere Classic,” Iowa golf coach Mark Hankins said. “Steven has had a great career at the University of Iowa, earned this opportunity through his collegiate and amateur play, and is looking forward to competing at TPC Deere Run as he begins the next stage of his golf career. I am very proud of him and continue to appreciate his positive impact on our program.”
