Dixon erupts for 63 points in Game Time League

[ 0 ] July 2, 2014 |

As one of the top 3-point shooters in the history of the Iowa women’s basketball program, Melissa Dixon is used to connecting from long distance.

But even she was surprised by what she did Wednesday night  in the Game Time League.

Dixon, a senior-to-be shooting guard from Johnsburg, Ill., made 13-of-24 3-point baskets and scored 63 points during her team’s victory at the North Liberty Community Center. She was consistent throughout the game, scoring 33 points in the first half and 30 in the second half.

“I didn’t really know that I had that many,” Dixon said, sounding almost embarrassed. “I don’t know (what to say).

Asked how many points she thought she had, Dixon came up way short.

“Maybe like high 30s,” she said. “I don’t pay attention to that.”

Dixon’s point total set a GTL record for a single game and is the most points she has scored in a game at any level, she said.

Dixon credited her teammates, which included incoming Iowa freshman forward Carly Mohns, for putting her in a situation to score a lot of points. Mohns led their team with seven assists.

“Our team just did a good job of moving the ball around and I was getting some open looks,” Dixon said.

Making 3-pointers is nothing new for Dixon, who will enter her senior season ranked fifth in program history with 210 3-point baskets. She made a career-high 97 3-point baskets for an Iowa team that finished 27-9 last season. That is the highest single-season total in program history.
