The former Iowa basketball player who allegedly punched a man in the face and then blew him a kiss while walking out of an Iowa City bar has pleaded not guilty.

According to documents filed Monday in Johnson County District Court, Zach McCabe, 22, has filed a written plea of not guilty to a serious misdemeanor charge for assault causing bodily injury that stems from an incident that allegedly occurred April 16 at DC’s bar, 124 S. Dubuque St.

On that day, McCabe punched a man in the face, causing a small cut, pain, bruising and swelling near the victim’s left eye, according to court documents.

McCabe, who was a senior co-captain on the Hawkeyes’ NCAA Tournament team this past season, played in all 33 University of Iowa games and was eighth on the team in scoring, has demanded a speedy trial and is scheduled for an Aug. 25 pretrial conference and a Sept. 9 jury trial.

Police say video footage from a security camera in the bar showed McCabe in an argument with a woman when the victim approached and attempted to separate the two. McCabe then punched the man, knocking the victim to the floor, and, as McCabe walked out of the bar he blew a kiss to the victim, according to police.
