This class is ranked from 3rd to 5th in the 12 team, Big Ten. That bodes quite well for a Coaching staff the excels at developing football players.
Great to be a Hawkeye, with solid football program and the Hoops program is rising like a Phoenix to its glory days!
Impressive depends on your perspective. If you are basing that on comparing our recruiting class with other recruiting classes nationwide, then I don’t think so. SI had them rated about 41st in Division I. I haven’t seen the listing of the rankings, but 41st is not impressive, it’s more like mediocre. There have been a couple of articles the last few months about how the Iowa Football program is about 20th for “value” and also “revenue”. With the support given this program and facilities, we should be much closer to a top 20 recruiting class than 41. Either the recruiting continues to be moribund or it reflects the media bias towards certain schools. I would suggest it is a bit of both.

I see the overall individual quality in the recruits Iowa brought in- the kind of recruits you see continually listed on the roster instead of the police blotter, or the ones who are suspended or dropped from the program because of grades. I’ll take the “right stuff” in student-athletes any day before I take the young and dumb to represent the football program. Even the good ones go bad sometimes (ala Marcus Coker), but there is way too much drama with those recruits who are there based on football talents alone and a disregard or blind eye toward all other individual qualities.

I don’t get too hopped up about where we are ranked nationally in recruiting. If you win the big ten, if you finish high in the big ten, you go to a good bowl and probably beat (if you are Iowa) a team ranked higher in the recruiting world. Ok with me.

Recruiting rankings must be taken with a grain of salt. From a macro perspective, the star system does work out, but from a micro perspective, it is vastly overblown and inaccurate. Also, it tends to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. If OSU, Texas and Alabama offer you, then you deserve extra stars. If Iowa, MSU or Kansas State offer you, then you deserve less.
I agree Sparty, recruit rankings don’t mean much…since the level of competition is that much greater in NCAA division-1 than high school. Yet, in high school 4-6a class city schools usually have greater competition than that of say 1a-3a or even 8-man football teams. It’s all up to the coaching staff to improve these players, no matter how talented they were in high school. It’s where Iowa seperates itself from other Big Ten schools. Iowa can take blue collar type recruits and turn them into NFL players. It’s up to the recruits though and how determined…and if they are willing to work hard. Stars are overrated and often misleading in ranking recruits. It’s a crapshoot.

Most of the 2012 Iowa football recruits are from out-of-state.
The majority of Iowa football players are NOT even from Iowa. And yet, you rural Rubes continually crow about “Iowa Pride.”
Yes, there is so much Iowa pride … that your beloved gum-smacking coach continually searches for non-Iowa kids to play for Iowa.
Either there is no talent in Iowa, or Kirk Take-A-Knee prefers players who are not from the Hawkeye State.
Either way, it is just sad.

Nebraska signed 17, one was from Nebraska. Missouri signed 18, five from Missouri. Purdue signed 25, four from Indiana. Arkansas signed 23, four from Arkansas. Iowa signed 24, three from Iowa.
Pin what’s your point? Kids play for schools all over the country, no matter where they are from. This is a good thing, gives kids and their families a chance to experience another community and become fans of a program. I’m sure you appreciate having a kid from Ohio become a Longhorn and in Ohio a family is now wearing orange and white sporting their allegiance to their new favorite team. Like it or not, this is college athletics and I love seeing the Hawkeye logo in Florida, Texas, Arizona, etc because someone in the family went and played here. Ask that family if they have Iowa Pride, they absolutely do.
You made this statement more than once in multiple threads, it gets old and is a worthless point. Happens everywhere.
Mohawk some just don’t understand things about college football and you can see that again and again.
Texas Ron, our top talent in FB and BB usually seem to end up out of state. :(

You just can’t change a paradigm settler. Our friend Pin is still arguing about the War of Northern Aggression. We all know that the war was settled in April 1865, yet some have not yet fully gotten over it.
We should be celebrating the diversity of the team at Iowa (and across the country); lord knows if we were all from the same town or state, it gets pretty boring….
Look at all the “all hat, no cattle” people in texas…..
80′s, God forbid a top athlete in Iowa wants to experience a different community and collegiate atmosphere than where he/she has grown up their entire life. Same goes for other kids in other states. I really don’t see the point here, you don’t have to go to college where you grow up!
