I think Kirk should get Chuck back where he belongs.

OC Chuck Long

Yep, I’d love to hear the arguments for and against a Chuck Long return to Iowa…

Remember his O at Iowa, SDSU and Kansas?
Bring him if he can bring along the type of recruits they got at OK.
No thanks. How different is than KOK, really? …Actually, KOK won something at the DIII level on his own.

As a qb under Fry and under HF’s direction, he threw very safe and secure routes only. Mark Vlasic was a better qb, but was more of a risk taker and at times erratic.
I would guess his coaching would be much more of the same as we’ve seen.

I have nothing personal against Long, he’s always been a class guy, but he has proven to be a fairly marginal coach. Count me as a NO on this one.
Also, I know this will cause some to get their panties in a ruffle, but I’ve said for years that Long is perhaps Iowa’s most overrated player ever. I’m not saying he was bad, just not the “great” player many make him out to be.
What made Long’s numbers so good is that at the time Iowa had an OUTSTANDING OL, possibly the best OL we have ever had. He had enough time to throw the pass, pay his bills and have lunch. His arm was OK but not a rocket, and he wasn’t mobile at all. As soon as he got to the NFL, and experienced some pressure in the pocket, he tanked.
Look for Morgan or Campbell to be promoted this time around.

The coordinators need to come with a history at the University of Iowa. Not coaches from Fordham or Furman. Someone who feels the same passion as the fans for certain situations. This is what the program lacks. Chuck Long has this, like it or not.

Yes, Chuck has history, but that doesn’t mean he is a good coach. Given his past coaching failures, his past with Ferentz and his much talked about lazy work ethic, I’ll pass on Chuck.
Eric Campbell had no link to Iowa, but he turned out to be a very good addition. I’ll take that over Chuck & his history.

I’d like to see Kirk go after Jay Norvell for the OC position.
Hope Bradley gets the DC position. (he just has to make it by that witch Sally Mason)

Haven’t heard any talk about CL’s work ethic, but do agree that as a head coach, he had only marginal to minimal success. I think he’s one of those guys who may work better as a coordinator than a head coach.
I do like the idea of a “Hawkeye” coming home, and perhaps the torch being handed to him years down the road.
But I DO realize that’s just romanticizing.
As long the the new OC is sound and creates an offense that puts the defense in better positions, I’ll be content.

Norvell would be a good pickup & I’m sure becoming ‘the’ OC instead of the Co-OC would be appealing to him.
I know he turned down the same offer from Whisky, but all honesty, working for KF would be a lot better in my opinion than working for BB.
This will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Here is a sample of KF interviews with potential OCs:
KF: let’s say we’re down 10 points heading into the half, we have the ball on our own 40 and there are 52 seconds on the clock. What do you do?
Interviewee: Try a couple of deep routs, since we have nothing else to loose, or maybe screen to a back in the open field to get in FG range.
KF: Sorry, that’s just not the kind of thinking we want here. Thanks for coming in. BTW, in case you’re wondering, the right answer is to run off the clock.

I say grab the offensive coordinator from Boise State.
It will be a step up and a grooming station for a future head coach position.
By the way Colohawk I see why you would not want a coach from Fordham.
Heck, that’s where Vince Lombardi was from. Iowa would never want anybody like that.Posted 106 days ago -
Colo,
you couch the “iowa family connection” yet I’m sure you also attempt to poke fun at states that have that joke detrimental in terms of lineage….Chuck Long is NOT, I repeat NOT a good fit for what Iowa needs right now.

Someone said the coach will “NEED” Iowa roots. Roots would be nice but the coach “NEEDS” to be good!

KF has shown by his past hiring decisions that Iowa roots mean nothing to him.
